A new report revealed how federal law enforcement agencies and government entities purchase bulk user information from data brokers. The Center for Democracy and Technology released it earlier this month.
The report detailed the amount of data purchasing being conducted regularly by agencies such as the FBI, IRS, DEA and other government entities. The kind of data being collected varies, but includes GPS, internet and social media footprints.
Time and time again private companies have proven they care more about their bottom line than protecting Americans’ privacy. It’s past time for Congress to step in and pass my Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act to hold shady data brokers accountable once and for all.

Legislators have voiced their concerns about this practice with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) leading the charge.
“These companies need to be shutdown and Congress needs to step up to prevent the government from using a credit card instead of a warrant,” stated the Democrat lawmaker.
The senator has proposed the ‘Not For Sale Act,’ which would the prevent the purchasing of data without a court-issued warrant.
Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are exploiting loopholes to purchase sensitive personal information that they would otherwise need a court order to obtain.
