Dave Ramsey faces $150M lawsuit from his listeners.
Should Christians Sue Other Christians? Dave Ramsey’s Former Listeners Say Yes
In 1 Corinthians 6, the Apostle Paul wrote that lawsuits between Christians are a defeat. However, a group of 17 former listeners of Christian finance expert and radio host Dave Ramsey are suing him for more than $150 million.
“The lawsuit alleges that Ramsey, Timeshare Exit Team and Happy Hour Media Group, a marketing firm with ties to Brandon Reed, one of the founders of Timeshare Exit Team, violated the Washington Consumer Protection Act by defrauding customers, committed ‘negligent malpresentation’ and were guilty of ‘unjust enrichment’ and conspiracy.”
The suit stems from Ramsey’s endorsement of Timeshare Exit Team, a company that settled a lawsuit with the state attorney general’s office in 2021 over alleged deceptive business practices. According to the complaint, Ramsey received up to $30 million over seven years to promote the company’s services.
Ramsey stuck by the company even as allegations of fraud surfaced, accusing “government officials, reporters and the timeshare industry” of conspiring against it. Eventually, he dropped Timeshare Exit Team as an advertiser but continued to argue that he was not responsible for its actions.
While Paul restricts legal action between believers, Jesus outlined a process for handling disputes in Matthew 18. The 17 plaintiffs in this lawsuit allege that Timeshare Exit Team offered bad advice, created “fake property deeds” to mislead clients, and eventually stopped communicating with them altogether.
Regardless of the outcome, Christians should consider how they treat others, even those with whom they disagree. As Paul wrote in Colossians, “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
