David Hogg says Democrats are ‘failing to meet the moment’ in challenging Trump
Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman David Hogg suggested that the Democratic Party is “failing to meet the moment” presented to it by the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers serving in Congress.
Hogg commented that the Democratic Party’s approval rating is “not very good right now” and that it is unlikely the party would win back the House of Representatives if the 2026 midterm elections were held immediately. He argued that the party needs to address not just its messaging but the candidates elected to carry it out.
“You can have Shakespeare write the script, for all I care. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have good actors, ultimately, and what we’re seeing around the country right now is our base — we’re failing to meet the moment,” Hogg said on MSNBC. “A lot of our members of Congress are failing to meet the moment, frankly, and we need to make sure that they know that they’re going to be held accountable, and we’re going to have primary challenges in our safe seats, where we have members of Congress who, when they’re not being effective or they’re not able to meet this moment, that they know that there is a young person who is willing to challenge them, and there are resources behind them.”
Hogg continued by pointing to how several prominent Democratic members of Congress, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), were able to enter Congress by primarying a Democratic incumbent. He suggested the Democratic Party seek to focus on “out with the ineffective and in with the effective,” as its strategy, adding that it is not a matter of seeking to replace older members of Congress since there are Democratic lawmakers of “all ages who are failing to meet this moment.”
Hogg’s strategy comes as he is still working with his organization, Leaders We Deserve, which aims to intervene in Democratic primaries with $20 million aimed at electing younger politicians. He noted how Democratic supporters have told him that their donations would be halted until “major changes” are made within the party.
OUT OF POWER, DEMOCRATS RESORT TO THEATER AND PROCEDURE TO MOUNT TRUMP RESISTANCE
Amid the Democratic Party’s search for direction and strong leadership after the 2024 election, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) has claimed that Democrats have “a good message,” but that the party needs to rely on “the media” to carry it out. Conversely, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has suggested that the party’s low approval rating stems from its “toxic” branding, adding that lawmakers need to “find common ground” with each other.
Last week, the Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha suggested that the Democratic Party would struggle to win back voters if it keeps “speaking down” to them.
