The Rise of Violent Carjackings in Washington, D.C.
The city of Washington, D.C. is grappling with a disturbing trend – a surge in violent carjackings. These incidents have taken a dangerous turn, with criminals resorting to extreme measures to carry out their crimes.
Thieves Resort to Golf Club Attack
The latest incident involved a group of thieves who targeted food delivery drivers in the district. In a brazen attempt, they approached their victims with a golf club in hand, ready to strike.
On Monday afternoon, a driver noticed a black Toyota Camry tailing his vehicle. Sensing danger, he pulled over, only to be confronted by three suspects who had exited their vehicle in an alley. As they tried to forcefully remove him from his silver Toyota Camry, he fought back and called for help. A brave bystander stepped in, causing one of the suspects to brandish the golf club. However, they eventually retreated and fled the scene in their black sedan, all while witnesses captured the shocking incident on social media.
Food Delivery Driver Targeted
Last Friday, a food delivery driver fell victim to these carjackers in the southeast region of the district. Four suspects approached the driver, making threatening gestures to imply they were armed. They demanded the victim’s car keys and successfully stole the vehicle. However, their escape was short-lived as they crashed the stolen car into a parked vehicle and fled on foot. Two of the suspects were later apprehended and charged with robbery and first-degree theft of auto.
Washington attorney Denise Rucker Krepp expressed her outrage on social media, calling for the arrest of the parents of these juvenile criminals, stating, “The parents of the 15-year-olds arrested for robbery and theft of auto should be arrested for child endangerment.”
A Tragic Case that Shook the Nation
The severity of this carjacking crisis was brought to national attention when an Uber Eats driver named Mohammad Anwar was brutally attacked by a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl near Nationals Park. They carjacked his vehicle, assaulted him with a stun gun, and tragically crashed the car with him still attached, resulting in his death. The teenage perpetrators received the maximum sentence in 2021.
Despite these alarming incidents, Democratic D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson downplayed the gravity of the situation, claiming there is no crime crisis in the nation’s capital. However, he acknowledged the importance of addressing the public’s perception and ensuring the safety of all residents.
