Democrat Trayon White Sr. Calls for National Guard in D.C. Amid Escalating Crime
Democrat Trayon White Sr., a member of the DC Council, has made a passionate plea for the National Guard to intervene in his city following a recent surge in violence. Three individuals lost their lives, and two others were injured in a shooting incident that occurred in White’s district on Saturday night.
“We need the National Guard in D.C.,” White emphasized. “The crime is spiraling out of control, and it’s only getting worse with each passing day. Innocent lives, including children, are being tragically cut short. This cannot become the new normal.”
White’s concerns reflect the alarming rise in crime rates within the city. In August alone, there have been ten shootings resulting in thirteen fatalities, bringing the total number of homicides to at least 158 this year. This represents a staggering 22% increase compared to the previous year, making 2023 the deadliest year in the past two decades.
In an effort to combat the escalating violence, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser nominated Pamela A. Smith as the first black woman to lead the Metropolitan Police Department. Smith has been actively deploying law enforcement to high-crime areas, aiming to address the surge in violence.
Over the weekend, tragedy struck once again as three men were shot in Adams Morgan, a mere two blocks away from bustling bars and restaurants. Sadly, two of the victims succumbed to their injuries, while one remains in critical condition. Additionally, three more individuals lost their lives in Southeast Washington, bringing the total number of fatalities on Saturday alone to six.
Public Outrage and Calls for Action
Television host Greta Van Susteren took to social media to express her disbelief and frustration at the city’s leaders for allowing the situation to deteriorate to such an extent.
“I simply cannot comprehend the inaction of our DC leaders and the federal government. The level of violence in DC has reached alarming heights. We witnessed six murders just last night. Shouldn’t it be the responsibility of our leaders, who themselves enjoy security, to protect the citizens of DC?”
Responses on social media varied, with one user suggesting that the city’s leaders are exploiting gun violence to push for stricter gun control measures, even at the expense of Black lives. Another individual echoed similar sentiments, stating that this is a common occurrence in “blue cities” where government officials have their own security and are seemingly unaffected by the rising violence.
As the city grapples with this surge in crime, concerned citizens and public figures like Trayon White Sr. and Greta Van Susteren are demanding immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Washington, D.C.
