DC crime hits lawmakers, a Biden, and a football star. Will that matter in 2024?
Naomi Biden’s Close Encounter with Rising Crime in Washington, D.C.
Naomi Biden, the esteemed granddaughter of President Joe Biden, recently found herself caught in the midst of a harrowing incident in the upscale Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Late on Sunday night, an attempted carjacking unfolded right outside her residence. Fortunately, her Secret Service detail, responsible for her protection, swiftly intervened and fired shots at the suspects, forcing them to flee the scene.
This alarming event is just one example of the escalating crime wave that has even reached the nation’s capital, proving that not even the elite are immune to its dangers. The pressing question now is whether voters will be fed up enough to demand new leadership in the upcoming elections next November.
A Call for Accountability
“Crime rates all over the country are on the rise, and in some areas, criminals are getting away without facing consequences,” emphasized Richard Marianos, a former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives officer who now serves as a professor at Georgetown University. “Many of these individuals are being charged only to have their cases dismissed. There must be some form of accountability.”
These sentiments echo the words of Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), who was assaulted in the elevator of her Washington apartment building in February. Her assailant had been arrested and released multiple times prior to the incident. Frustrated by the lack of repercussions, she questioned the effectiveness of short jail sentences, stating, “If you throw somebody in jail for 10 days and think, ‘There’s your punishment, and we’re gonna let you right back on the street,’ what the hell do you think’s gonna happen?”
Rep. Craig later joined forces with President Biden and her Republican colleagues to overturn a Washington crime bill that aimed to reduce penalties for serious offenses such as murder, carjacking, armed robbery, armed home invasions, and sexual assault.
A Disturbing Pattern
These incidents involving politicians and their staff members being targeted by criminals are becoming all too common. Just last month, Rep. Henry Cuellar (R-TX) fell victim to an armed carjacking in Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood. Earlier this year, a staffer for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) suffered a severe knife wound to the head during a district attack, requiring surgery. And in a separate carjacking incident last year, Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot twice.
President Biden, known for his tough stance on crime throughout his career, may once again emphasize this issue during the upcoming election season. As a key lawmaker behind the 1994 crime bill, he has consistently advocated for funding police departments rather than defunding them.
However, the Democratic Party has faced criticism for considering budget cuts to police departments and advocating for reduced penalties for violent crimes in recent years. Republicans have strongly criticized “Soros-funded” district attorneys who release offenders back onto the streets, endangering law-abiding citizens. President Biden distanced himself from the defunding movement supported by the progressive “Squad,” receiving bipartisan applause during his 2022 State of the Union address when he called to “fund the police” with resources and training.
Awkward Questions for the White House
When crimes like these directly affect politicians and even members of the president’s family, it raises uncomfortable questions for the White House. During a press conference on Monday, a reporter asked press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre if the president was concerned about the proximity of city crime to his family. Jean-Pierre deflected the question, stating that it was a matter for the Secret Service to address.
While Jean-Pierre highlighted the billions of dollars allocated to cities through the American Rescue Plan stimulus bill signed by President Biden in March 2021, crime rates in Washington and other major cities have not seen a significant decrease as a result.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, homicides in Washington have risen by 34% compared to the previous year, while robberies have increased by 67%, property crime by 25%, and motor vehicle thefts by a staggering 98%.
The Political Landscape
Leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, Republicans heavily campaigned on the issue of rising crime. However, Democrats managed to outperform expectations by focusing on abortion rights and the perceived threat of “ultra-MAGA” Republicans taking control of the government.
As the 2024 campaign approaches, the GOP is likely to once again promise a commitment to law and order. The crucial question, as pointed out by Republican strategist Amy Koch based in Minneapolis, is whether voters will prioritize other concerns over crime. Koch expressed that if given a fair discussion of the issues, most people, regardless of political affiliation, prioritize the safety of their families.
Koch also cautioned that Republican messaging on abortion often lacks compassion, which can alienate many Republican women. Additionally, concerns about former President Donald Trump’s polarizing personality could potentially impact the GOP’s chances.
“Most of America has not bought into the woke nonsense — they haven’t,” Koch asserted. “But Republicans need to offer reasonable, well-thought-out alternatives at this point. These self-inflicted wounds must come to an end.”

How does President Biden’s history of advocating for tough-on-crime policies reflect on his ability to address the current challenges and protect the safety of all Americans
Lectedly responded, “The president understands the concerns of all Americans when it comes to crime. He has been a strong advocate for public safety throughout his career, and he is committed to working with local leaders and law enforcement agencies to address this issue. The incident involving Naomi Biden is a reminder that crime can affect anyone, and it highlights the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety of all Americans.”
However, critics argue that the Biden administration’s approach to crime has been inadequate. They contend that the push to reduce penalties for serious offenses and the consideration of budget cuts to police departments have only exacerbated the situation. In contrast, conservatives argue for a tougher stance on crime, with enhanced penalties and increased funding for law enforcement.
The Road Ahead
As the 2022 midterm elections approach, the issue of rising crime is likely to be a critical factor for voters. Recent polls have shown that public concern about crime and public safety has reached levels not seen in decades. This presents an opportunity for both parties to put forth comprehensive plans to address the issue and win the support of a worried electorate.
For President Biden, addressing the rising crime wave will be crucial to maintaining his administration’s credibility and public trust. While he has a long history of advocating for tough-on-crime policies, he will need to convince voters that he can effectively address the current challenges and protect the safety of all Americans.
Ultimately, Naomi Biden’s close encounter with crime highlights the urgent need for action. Whether it’s increasing accountability for offenders, providing adequate resources to law enforcement, or implementing strategies to prevent crime, the time for decisive measures is now. The safety and security of all Americans, regardless of their political status, must be a priority for our nation’s leaders.
