In Washington, D.C., several major events will be happening in the coming weeks, and law enforcement is increasing its security posture in light of the deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans.
The attack on Bourbon Street in the early hours of the new year in the Big Easy killed at least 15 people, and a Cybertruck explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday is also being investigated as possible terrorism.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said Wednesday that while there is “no known threat to the District of Columbia,” there will be a “heightened security posture” citywide due to multiple high-profile events in January.

“While we do not discuss specifics regarding operation, tactics, or staffing, the community will notice an increased police presence throughout the city,” a statement from the police department said.
“As we approach upcoming major events in the District of Columbia, MPD will continue working with our local and federal partners to assess potential threats and make any necessary adjustments to safeguard the community,” the statement added.
In Washington, the new Congress will be sworn in on Friday, the 2024 presidential election will be certified by Congress on Monday, and former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral will be held next Thursday. On Jan. 20, President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated, and several events will occur for that occasion as well.
Washington’s Metro Transit Police Department also said it would increase security while emphasizing that there is no known threat against the D.C. Metro, which also serves parts of Maryland and Virginia.
“While there are no known threats to Metro, MTPD has heightened security across the system out of an abundance of caution. Customers may notice an increased police presence as a result,” MTPD Chief Michael Anzallo said in a statement Wednesday evening.
The election certification and the presidential inauguration are both designated as National Special Security Events by the Department of Homeland Security, meaning law enforcement will receive significant resources from the federal government for a comprehensive security plan to be implemented. Both events received this designation last year.
