Deadly Drug-Resistant Fungus Spreading In Hospitals Across U.S.
A new report has raised concerns about a drug-resistant fungus known as Candida auris, or C. auris, that is rapidly spreading in hospitals across the United States. This fungus can cause fatal infections in susceptible individuals, particularly those with weakened immune systems, with one-third of those infected dying. However, healthy people are not considered to be at risk. The fungus is challenging to control once it enters a hospital and can persist, causing infections for an extended period despite the best efforts of infection control teams. In Mississippi, four people have died due to the fungus since November. The fungus was first widely reported in 2016 when it caused four fatalities. In 2021, clinical cases in the United States rose dramatically from 476 in 2019 to 1,471. C. auris can be spread not only from person to person but also through contact with patient rooms. Therefore, it is crucial to stop the spread of the fungus before it becomes widespread like MRSA, another drug-resistant bacteria.
