Phillips (D-Minn.) made the announcement of his presidential campaign ‌on Friday, ‌delivering a⁣ speech in New Hampshire after filing for candidacy. He believes that it’s time for President Joe Biden ‌to⁣ pass the torch “to a new‍ generation of American leaders.”

“I am⁣ thrilled to ‍declare my candidacy‌ for President in ⁣2024. It’s ‍time to unite our country and use our differences to make ‍us stronger. Let’s rebuild America,” Phillips said in a launch video⁢ shared on social media on ⁢Thursday evening.

The millionaire ⁤businessman’s campaign launch comes as Biden’s approval ratings continue to decline among many Americans. Concerns about the 80-year-old president’s physical and mental stamina are growing.

In 2018, Phillips defeated five-term Republican Erik Paulsen, flipping ⁢the House seat to the Democratic Party.

Phillips has positioned himself as a candidate who will address⁢ issues such as high living costs, the border crisis, rising crime⁣ rates, and ⁣substance abuse.

“The majority of our neighbors live paycheck to paycheck… struggling to get ahead and save‌ for their ⁢dreams,” Phillips said. “Life has become unaffordable. Corporations⁢ and the wealthy, including myself, receive more favorable tax treatment than working families.”

Earlier this month, the Minnesota Democrat⁤ stated in an interview⁣ with Minnesota Public Radio News that “it’s important to have‍ alternatives. I believe voters are demanding it.”

During an‍ interview with CBS⁣ News, Phillips highlighted recent polls indicating that former President Donald Trump ‍is gaining an edge over Biden in hypothetical ⁤2024 general election matchups.

“I believe President Biden has done an outstanding job for our country,” Phillips‍ said. “But this election is not about the past. It’s⁤ about the⁤ future.”

Meanwhile, the congressman has been a strong supporter ⁤of Biden‍ but has become critical of his re-election bid ⁢in recent months. Phillips maintains that he is not against Biden, but rather advocates for a ⁢new generation to⁤ take the reins⁣ of ⁣power.

“I have been‍ a ‍Democrat since⁤ I was 11 years old, and I deeply believe in the ⁢Democratic Party of today — because‍ we believe, in the words of my hero Hubert Humphrey, that the moral test of government is how it ⁣treats those in‌ the dawn of life, in the dusk of life,‍ and in the⁣ shadows‌ of life,” Phillips said.

“I‌ am a Democrat because I believe in America,” Phillips added. “I believe in the American people, and I believe it is time to step out of the‌ darkness and into a bright future right here.”
