Dean Phillips challenges both Joe Biden and the GOP contenders: “I’m ready to debate anyone
Democratic Candidate Dean Phillips Criticizes Nikki Haley’s Refusal to Debate
Long-shot Democratic primary candidate Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) has taken aim at former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley for her decision to opt out of a New Hampshire debate. Phillips, who is challenging President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the lack of debates during the primary cycle, targeting both the Democratic National Committee and Biden himself.
“Donald Trump won’t debate. Joe Biden won’t debate. Nikki Haley won’t debate,”
he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I will debate anyone,”
he said. “Because democracy dies without debate.”
On Tuesday, Haley released a statement stating that she would only participate in debates if either former President Donald Trump or Biden were involved.
“The next debate I do will either be with Donald Trump or with Joe Biden. I look forward to it,”
Haley said.
This new stance by Haley jeopardized a planned Thursday debate organized by ABC News and WMUR, as only Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) had confirmed his participation. The organizers set a deadline of 5 p.m. for Haley and Trump to confirm, but the debate was ultimately canceled.
After coming in third in the Iowa caucuses, Haley declared at her watch party that her campaign had transformed the primary into a “two-person race” leading up to the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23.
