Death Of The Muscle Car: Dodge Reveals Final Gas-Powered Challenger As Company Shifts To EV Production

Dodge has released the latest model of its iconic Challenger, marking the end of their famed gas-powered muscle car production and the beginning of a new era in electric vehicles.

The 2023 Challenger SRT Demon is Stellantis’ last V8 car and also its most powerful, with a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 boasting 1,025 horsepower and 945 foot-pounds of torque. The car can reach 60 mph in just 1.66 seconds, making it the world’s fastest production car, according to Dodge, as reported by CNBC.

Last August, Dodge announced that they would begin the transition from gas-powered vehicles to EVs by the end of the year due to strict government emissions regulations. According to CNBC, Dodge’s parent company, Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, is at the bottom of the list of U.S. car manufacturers for fuel economy and carbon emissions.

The seven special-edition models that Dodge sold, including the latest Challenger SRT Demon, have said goodbye to the muscle car that made the company famous. With the car hitting the market at $96,666 and optional accessories and fees adding up to $120,000, customers should prepare for a hefty price tag.

Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis was honest about the car’s fuel economy, stating that it is “horrible,” but he went on to argue that the SRT Demon would have eco-friendly benefits because it runs on an E85 ethanol blend fuel. The immense power of the car’s rear wheels makes it capable of popping wheelies, as CNBC reported.

According to Kuniskis, engineering the car was a challenge, with engines blowing up during the process to optimize performance. This pushed back the SRT Demon’s debut.

“You have to celebrate this end,” Kuniskis told CNBC, referring to the end of Dodge’s muscle car era.

Car enthusiasts or anyone hoping to be a part of the end of an era can order the Challenger SRT Demon on March 27. Stellantis plans to build only 3,000 vehicles for the U.S. and 300 for Canada, so potential buyers should act fast.
