Delegate claims black women will ‘blow up’ Democratic Party without Harris

California Delegate Areva Martin argued that black women would “blow up” the Democratic Party if it replaced President Joe Biden with a candidate other than Vice President Kamala Harris.

Discussion about replacing Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee has grown exponentially since the first presidential debate, with many arguing the president gave a weak performance against former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee. Martin argued that while it is far too late to swap Biden out with a different candidate, replacing him with someone other than Harris would result in major pushback from minority women such as herself.

“You’ve got to build consensus, and there is not consensus right now!” Martin said during a discussion with sports journalist Stephen A. Smith. “You pick a white man over Kamala Harris, black women, I can tell you this, we gonna walk away, we gonna blow the party up!”

Smith rebuked Martin’s assessment of women potentially leaving the Democratic Party and asked who Martin and other black women would support if Harris did not replace Biden, arguing they would not “walk away to Trump.”

Unlike most media personalities, Smith has suggested well before the debate that Biden should not seek reelection in 2024, citing his age, 81, and growing disapproval polling numbers. He also argued that anyone suggesting Biden continue his reelection campaign after his State of the Union speech, where he appeared more energetic than usual, was “smoking crack.”

Regarding Biden’s reelection campaign, Martin said she predicts the president will successfully win the 2024 election and encouraged Democrats to “stay the course.” She added that while she does not know anything about sports, a team does not simply “give up on your star player in the middle of a game.”

Possible replacements some have floated for the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee include Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), first Lady Michelle Obama, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The Washington Examiner’s Kaylee McGhee White argued that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) would be the best candidate, though she conceded it may be too late to replace Biden with anyone.

First lady Jill Biden has stated her husband “will always do what’s best for the country,” and that the Biden family will “continue to fight” in the president’s reelection bid. She contended that her husband would not let the first debate define his presidency.
