Vice President Kamala Harris seems to be on her way to being the next presumptive Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election. Multiple reports revealed that the vice president has gained enough support from delegates in her party to become the official nominee.

Multiple state delegations met on Monday evening throughout the country to confirm their support for Harris. By nightfall, it was believed that Harris had received support from more than the necessary 1,976 delegates she needed to be victorious on the eventual first ballot and earn the party’s nomination, the Associated Press reported.

After President Joe Biden made the surprise announcement on Sunday that he would not seek reelection, he declared that he would support Harris as the Democratic nominee. Based on multiple sources, Democrats nationwide worked quickly to firm up support behind the vice president. Her campaign set a new record for donations, according to the Associated Press.

After Biden announced he was not seeking reelection and endorsed Harris, the vice president announced that she had planned to get enough support to earn the nomination rightfully.

“It is my intention to go out and earn this nomination and to win,” Harris said then. “In the days and weeks ahead, I will do everything in my power to unite our party, to unite our nation, and to win this election.”

Harris held a meeting with staff on Tuesday, detailing the themes of her campaign and the political messages she will convey on the campaign trails. She emphasized that defending abortion access would be an integral part of her campaign, according to the Associated Press.

“Our fight for the future is also a fight for freedoms,” she said. “The baton is in our hands.”

President Joe Biden, who has not been visible to the public since it was announced he was diagnosed with COVID, called into Harris’s event and expressed his support for the vice president.

“The name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed at all,” Biden said.
