Biden denies border crisis despite surging illegal crossings
President Biden Denies Crisis at Southern Border as Illegal Crossings Reach Record Highs
President Joe Biden confidently dismissed claims of a crisis at the southern border, despite a surge in illegal crossings. When asked by Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson if he considered the situation a crisis, Biden shifted blame to Republicans and stated that major changes were needed at the border.
Before departing for Camp David, I asked President Biden if the situation on the southern border is a crisis. “No,” Biden replied. “I have been pushing them – my Republican colleagues since they got in office. I think we have to make major changes to the border.”

Republicans wasted no time criticizing Biden’s remarks, placing the blame squarely on the Biden administration’s policies. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) called Biden the “architect of the open border crisis” and labeled him as the most dishonest, corrupt, and incompetent President in American history.
Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) highlighted the staggering number of illegal aliens crossing the border since Biden took office, emphasizing that there is indeed a crisis caused by the White House and the Democrat Party.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) criticized Biden for ignoring strong border security legislation passed by House Republicans, asserting that there is a crisis at the border and it is solely Biden’s responsibility.

In December, Border Patrol reported a staggering 300,000 encounters with illegal immigrants at the southern border, reaching an all-time high. Additionally, a significant number of individuals from China and thousands of Africans reportedly flew into Central America before attempting to cross into the United States.
The release of many illegal immigrants into the United States has strained the infrastructure of both small towns and major cities across the country. Just recently, New York City made the controversial decision to house illegal immigrants in a high school overnight, disrupting students’ education and forcing them into remote learning.
What factors have contributed to the significant increase in illegal border crossings during the first few months of Biden’s presidency?
Ain cause of the surge in illegal crossings. Johnson argued that Biden’s reversal of several immigration policies implemented by the previous administration, such as the remain in Mexico policy and the construction of the border wall, has contributed to the current situation.
The numbers seem to back up the concerns expressed by Republicans. In the first few months of Biden’s presidency, there has been a significant increase in illegal border crossings. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that in March, over 172,000 migrants were encountered at the border, the highest number in over 20 years. This represents a 71% increase from the previous month and a staggering 450% increase compared to March 2020.
Critics argue that the Biden administration’s rhetoric and promises of a more welcoming approach to immigration have served as a pull factor for migrants seeking to enter the United States illegally. The administration’s decision to halt deportations for certain categories of undocumented immigrants and to prioritize the processing of asylum claims has also been seen as a factor contributing to the surge at the border.
Others point to the deteriorating conditions in Central American countries, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent natural disasters, as a driving force behind the increase in migration. The combination of economic instability, violence, and lack of opportunity has pushed many individuals to take the risk of making the arduous journey north in search of safety and a better life.
As the situation continues to escalate, the Biden administration faces mounting pressure to address the crisis at the southern border. Calls for increased border security, including the completion of the border wall, have been made by Republicans and some moderate Democrats. However, progressive Democrats argue that the solution lies in addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, violence, and corruption in Central America, rather than focusing solely on border enforcement measures.
Efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the immigration issue have been met with challenges. The Biden administration recently unveiled a proposed immigration reform bill, which includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and increased funding for border security and technology. However, the bill faces an uphill battle in Congress, where partisan divides and differing opinions on immigration policy make it difficult to reach consensus.
In the meantime, the crisis at the southern border shows no signs of abating. The Biden administration must navigate the delicate balance between humanitarian concerns and maintaining the integrity of the border. As the number of illegal crossings continues to reach record highs, the pressure to find effective solutions grows stronger. Only time will tell how the Biden administration will tackle this complex and contentious issue.
