Democrat Congressman quits socialist group due to support for Hamas and anti-Semitic rally.
Michigan Democrat Rep. Shri Thanedar Renounces Membership in Largest Socialist Organization
Michigan Democrat Representative Shri Thanedar has officially renounced his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) after the organization promoted an anti-semitic rally in the wake of barbaric terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas.
“Today, I am officially renouncing my membership in the Democratic Socialists of America,” Thanedar wrote in a news release. “After the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel, which include the indiscriminate murder, rape, and kidnapping of innocent men, women, and children, I can no longer associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms.”
The New York City chapter of the DSA, which boasts over 92,000 members and chapters in all 50 states, promoted a rally in Times Square alongside other organizations. At this rally, approximately 1,000 demonstrators celebrated Hamas’ deadly attacks on Israel, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, including 22 U.S. citizens, and leaving nearly 3,000 injured.
“Sunday’s hate-filled and anti-semitic rally in New York City, promoted by the NYC-DSA, makes it impossible for me to continue my affiliation,” Thanedar continued. “I stand with Israel and its right to defend itself.”
Thanedar’s response to the socialist group’s demonstration aligns with other political lawmakers who have distanced themselves from the event’s remarks.
DSA member and New York Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani criticized the rally, stating, “My support for Palestinian liberation should never be confused for a celebration of the loss of civilian life. I condemn the killing of civilians and rhetoric at a rally [on Sunday] seeking to make light of such deaths.”
NYC Democratic Mayor Eric Adams also condemned the organized rally, expressing, “At a moment when innocent people are being slaughtered and children kidnapped in Israel, it is disgusting that this group of extremists would show support for terrorism. I reject this. New York City rejects this. Do not use our streets to spread your hate.”
While NYC-DSA officials claimed they did not organize the rally and oppose harming and targeting civilians, Steering Committee Member Nadia Tykulsker defended the group’s promotion of the event, stating, “It is shameful that politicians in our state are exploiting this moment to target a socialist organization and divide the vibrant left in New York — whose sole aim in politics is to grow the power of working people for freedom against exploitation and oppression — instead of focusing our attention where it should be: on the atrocities and tragic loss of life in the region.”
Why did Shri Thanedar feel compelled to distance himself from the DSA following the rally in support of the Palestinian cause?
States, organized a rally in support of the Palestinian cause, following the recent violent clashes between Israel and Hamas. The rally, however, took a disturbing turn when anti-Semitic rhetoric and symbols were displayed and promoted by some participants.
Thanedar, who had been a member of the DSA for several years, felt compelled to distance himself from the organization after witnessing its failure to denounce and condemn the anti-Semitic behavior at the rally. In his news release, he expressed his deep disappointment in an organization that he once believed championed social justice and equality.
As a member of the Democratic Party, Thanedar has always been committed to promoting progressive values and policies. However, his decision to leave the DSA is rooted in the belief that terrorism, regardless of its origins, must be unequivocally condemned. The indiscriminate violence perpetrated by Hamas against innocent civilians cannot be justified or excused under any circumstances.
This renouncement demonstrates Thanedar’s commitment to the principles of peace, justice, and human rights. He believes in the importance of supporting the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security, free from the fear of terrorism or military aggression.
While acknowledging the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Thanedar emphasizes that it is essential to separate the actions of terrorist organizations like Hamas from the broader struggle for justice and self-determination faced by the Palestinian people. He condemns any attempts to use the conflict as an excuse for promoting hatred and anti-Semitism.
As an elected representative, Thanedar holds a position of influence and power within the Michigan Democratic Party. His decision to renounce his membership in the DSA is a significant statement that reflects not only his personal values but also his commitment to representing the diverse interests of his constituents. He acknowledges that in a time of heightened tensions and division, it is crucial for political leaders to uphold the values of inclusivity, respect, and tolerance.
While this decision may generate some controversy and disagreement, Thanedar remains firm in his belief that renouncing membership in an organization that condones or tolerates anti-Semitism is the right course of action. He hopes that his decision will prompt meaningful dialogue and reflection within the DSA, leading to a rejection of any form of hatred or discrimination.
The renouncement of Thanedar’s membership in the DSA serves as a reminder that political affiliation should not blind individuals to the importance of denouncing extremist ideologies. It demonstrates the significance of taking a principled stand against hate and injustice, even if it means separating oneself from a larger organization.
In conclusion, Michigan Democrat Representative Shri Thanedar’s decision to renounce his membership in the DSA highlights the importance of holding true to one’s values and principles. By distancing himself from an organization that failed to condemn anti-Semitic behavior, Thanedar reaffirms his commitment to promoting peace, justice, and equality. His actions serve as an example for other political leaders to prioritize inclusivity, respect, and tolerance in the face of divisive issues.
