Governor urges local leaders to welcome migrants and avoid bigotry.
New York Governor Urges Officials to Welcome Immigrants
“Join us,” says Governor Kathy Hochul, urging parts of the country and state to accept immigrants and not be “bigoted.”
Standing Up Against Bigotry
Hochul’s comments come in response to Suffolk County’s refusal to accept migrants bused in from New York City. Earlier this month, Democratic mayor Eric Adams announced his plan to bus migrants to suburban areas outside his city, despite criticizing Republican governors for doing the same to New York City for months.
Rockland and Orange Counties declared a state of emergency to prevent Adams from busing migrants to their communities, but Hochul is standing up against bigotry and urging officials to welcome immigrants.
Financial Support for Immigrants
“I understand hesitation of the unknown, but these individuals are coming with full financial support,” Hochul said on Monday. Let’s show the world what New York is really about and welcome those seeking a better life.”
