Democrat campaigns in Virginia for vulnerable GOP House seat.
A Democrat Launches Campaign for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District Seat
A Democrat in Virginia has recently announced her campaign for the 2nd Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA).
Missy Cotter Smasal, a veteran, former small business owner, and mother, is seeking to represent the district, according to her campaign website. Kiggans, who also has a military background, served in the Navy.
Key Issues and Approach
Smasal’s campaign website highlights four key issues that she aims to address: protecting abortion rights, supporting veterans, improving school safety, and strengthening the district’s economy. Notably, she has chosen to focus on these issues rather than more controversial Democratic priorities, likely due to the district’s divided political landscape.
“Missy is masquerading as a moderate, but she’s just a liberal Democrat who will be a rubber stamp for Joe Biden’s failed policies that are making Virginians’ lives tougher every day. Whether it’s the cost of groceries or gas, rising crime, a broken border, or lack of support for our military and veterans, Biden’s policies are hurting hardworking Virginia families, making it impossible for them to make ends meet and feel secure. Jen Kiggans has kept her promise to restore American strength by supporting our military and Virginia’s families. Virginians deserve a representative who is focused on them and not someone who will rubber stamp Joe Biden’s liberal agenda,”
said Danny Laub, Kiggans’s senior adviser.
“Missy Cotter Smasal is an extreme Democrat with a losing record who is the wrong fit for this district. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans is delivering support for service members’ mental health and fighting to preserve Medicare and Social Security,”
stated Delanie Bomar, spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Election History and Outlook
Kiggans secured her seat in the House of Representatives during the midterm elections, defeating former Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria, who had been elected in 2018. Luria served on the controversial Jan. 6 Committee, making her the only vulnerable Democrat to do so. Prior to the midterm elections, Luria expressed her willingness to accept potential electoral consequences, stating, “If I don’t get re-elected because of this, that’s OK.”
In the election, Kiggans emerged victorious with a margin of approximately 10,000 votes over Luria. The Cook Political Report currently rates Kiggans’s seat as “Lean Republican.”
