Democrat lawmaker claims most Americans want Biden to skip 2024 reelection.
Rep. Dean Phillips Calls on President Biden to Pass the Torch
During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) made a bold statement, declaring that the majority of Americans are ready to “turn the page” and urging President Joe Biden not to seek reelection. Phillips emphasized that he was not criticizing President Biden, but rather representing the sentiments of the country.
“The call to action is to ask the president to pass the torch,” he said Sunday, highlighting President Biden’s “extraordinary legacy.”
Phillips stressed that he hears from ordinary Americans every day and that their desire for change is palpable. He pointed to recent polling that shows President Biden’s approval ratings dropping in key swing states, with a significant percentage of Democrats expressing a preference for a new presidential candidate in 2024.
As of Monday, President Biden’s approval rating average stood at 41.1 percent approval versus 54.2 percent disapproval.
While there has been speculation that Rep. Phillips may be interested in running for the presidency himself, he has not made a definitive commitment. However, he believes there is a strong bench of potential candidates, particularly Democratic governors from swing states, who could secure the Oval Office.
Swing State Support
Rep. Phillips highlighted several Democratic governors as viable candidates, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. He also mentioned other potential contenders who have considered running but are hesitant to join the primaries.
According to Phillips, a moderate governor from one of the four crucial swing states would have the best chance of winning the presidency for the Democrats.
He acknowledged that some individuals fear the potential repercussions of openly expressing their support for alternative candidates, criticizing the institutionalized protection of the “status quo” in Washington.
When asked why these conversations are often happening in private, Rep. Phillips attributed it to people’s focus on self-preservation rather than principle.
He clarified that his appeal for new candidates is not about President Biden’s age and that he does not support a third-party bid. Instead, he encourages anyone interested, including Joe Manchin, Cornell West, and other governors, to run in the primary, emphasizing the importance of a fair and competitive process.
Opposition to Third Party Bid
Democrats have voiced opposition to the idea of a third-party bid, fearing that it would split the Democratic vote and potentially lead to an easy victory for the GOP frontrunner, former President Donald Trump.
In Arizona, the Democratic Party attempted to prevent the independent No Labels Party from appearing on the primary ballot, but their challenge was rejected by a judge.
While Sen. Joe Manchin has participated in No Labels events and released fundraising numbers, he has not officially announced a third-party bid for the presidency or confirmed whether he will run for reelection.
Rep. Dean Phillips’s call for new leadership and his appeal to prioritize the interests of the American people over political self-interest have sparked a lively debate within the Democratic Party.
