Democrat Pramila Jayapal laughs during discussion of headline about undocumented immigrant raping minor in NYC
Rep. Pramila Jayapal faced criticism after she laughed during a TV interview while discussing the news chyrons displayed during President Biden’s speech on immigration. One of these chyrons, from Fox News, mentioned a violent crime committed by an illegal immigrant. During the MSNBC segment with Joy Reid, Jayapal commented on what she considered fear mongering through such chyrons. Meanwhile, the chyrons on other networks focused on Biden’s announcement of executive action to provide legal protections for certain undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) faced backlash online on Thursday after she chuckled during a television interview when discussing multiple news chyrons that networks displayed during a Biden immigration speech, one of which from Fox News referred to an illegal alien in New York City who violently raped a young girl late last week.
“There’s a lot of fear mongering,” Jayapal claimed during an MSNBC segment with Joy Reid.
Reid read chyrons that the three major cable news networks had on their screens as Biden held a press conference announcing that he was taking executive action to protect hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens in the U.S.
The chyrons said:
- MNSBC: “Soon Biden Announces Legal Protections For Undocumented Spouses Of U.S. Citizens”
- CNN: “Biden Announcing New Protections For Some Undocumented Spouses”
- Fox News: “Migrant Arrested For Raping 13-Year-Old NYC Girl”
As soon as Reid read the Fox News chyron, Jayapal chuckled, “Ah, yes!” She added that she believes Fox News was fear mongering — even though the violent attack did happen and garnered national headlines.

Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, 25, was arraigned on multiple charges this week after a group of Good Samaritans beat him up and held him until authorities were able to arrest him early on Tuesday. He had been on the run for several days after the attack on a 13-year-old girl in Kissena Park in Queens.
The New York Post reported that the Ecuadorian illegal alien was charged with predatory sexual assault, first-degree rape, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, obstructing governmental administration, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors said in court that Inga-Landi, who illegally entered the U.S. in 2021, stated during a videotaped confession: “I was nervous at first, then got comfortable and recorded it.” Assistant District Attorney Kasey Esposito reportedly read the transcript of the videotaped statement.
