Democrat Rep. likens abortion pills to headache meds.

Democratic Representative ⁤Compares⁣ Abortion Pill to ⁢Tylenol

On Monday, ‌a ‍Democratic ‌Representative⁢ compared the ⁣abortion ‌pill⁢ mifepristone ‌to ⁤the ⁤headache ⁢and pain⁣ reliever Tylenol, even referring to the abortion ‌pills as a “lifeline” for women.

Representative Cori ⁤Bush ‌(D-MO)‌ made ⁤the comments‍ during ⁣a‍ discussion⁣ on “Medication⁤ Abortion Access and Republican Efforts⁢ to Ban Abortion Nationwide.” ‌Bush‍ was joined by fellow Democrats on the⁤ House Oversight Committee, including Maryland Rep.⁢ Jamie⁢ Raskin and Texas Rep.⁢ Jasmine Crockett.

“Banning ⁢medication abortion ⁢would ⁤be ⁤like placing⁢ a ⁤ban on Tylenol‍ [or] ⁤a‍ ban on antibiotics,” ⁤Bush said. ⁤“There is no ⁣scientific, ⁢no valid⁣ medical⁤ reason‌ to ‌do so. It‍ is only political propaganda.”

The ⁤Missouri congresswoman ⁤claimed ‌the ⁢pills were ⁢“effective” ‍and “safe” and ⁢said⁤ they ⁢were “no different‌ from ⁤any⁤ other⁢ medication that’s ⁤safe⁣ and effective.” ‍She said that ⁢for 23 years,‌ the⁣ Food⁣ and Drug ‌Administration approved of⁤ the pills,‍ and went on to explain that, in⁣ her ‌view, abortion pills are actually ⁣a ‍“lifeline.”

“Medication abortion is ‍a ‍lifeline,” she said.⁤ “A ‌lifeline⁤ for ‌the ⁤person working multiple jobs ⁤that ⁣cannot⁣ afford⁤ to take⁢ a ⁢day⁤ off⁤ work because‌ wages are too low or they⁢ don’t have⁢ paid‍ sick ⁣leave,⁢ a lifeline for the mom of ⁢two⁢ who‍ cannot afford‌ childcare ⁢or‍ cannot⁣ find affordable childcare.”

“It’s⁢ a lifeline for the ‍trans ⁢folks who ‍face‍ transphobia and ‍bigotry because of ‌anti-LGBT+⁣ laws⁢ and⁤ outrageous ‍bans⁢ on ‌gender-affirming⁤ care,” the ⁤congresswoman added.

Mifepristone and the Abortion ‍Debate

Mifepristone⁤ is‍ used‌ to⁤ end‌ the life of⁣ an unborn child ⁣in roughly half ⁤of all‌ abortions ‌in the⁣ United ⁣States. In ‍April, a federal judge ‌in Texas⁢ suspended ‌the⁣ FDA ⁣approval ‍of the pill,⁤ while ‍around ‍the‍ same ‌time, ⁢a U.S. ⁢district‍ judge⁢ in Washington state issued a ‍conflicting ⁣ruling.

Shortly after⁤ the Texas judge’s ‍restriction‌ of the ‌abortion⁣ pill, the⁣ United States ⁢Supreme⁤ Court blocked ⁤the‌ ruling, ‌allowing‌ the approval⁢ of ⁣the ‌pill while a lawsuit‌ proceeds ‌in ‌federal court.

Abortion⁣ Laws ‍and ‌Impact

In ‌the year‌ since⁤ the overturning of‍ Roe v. ⁢Wade, Republican state ⁢legislatures have been ‍passing⁤ pro-life laws protecting ‌the unborn. Last ‍week, ‌Republican Iowa⁤ Governor Kim Reynolds signed an ⁤abortion ban that prevented abortions, with‌ some exceptions, ⁣when‍ a heartbeat was‌ detected, ⁣usually around six‍ weeks. However, three ‍days ⁤later, ‍a district⁣ court judge temporarily‌ blocked the law, which‍ is being ⁢challenged ⁣in court ⁢by abortion⁣ providers.

And last month, ‍a study was ‌released ⁤estimating‍ that as a result⁣ of the Texas Heartbeat Act, ⁣which went‌ into⁣ effect in ‌September 2021, ⁢nearly ⁣10,000 more⁣ babies were born ‌in ⁣the state between April and December⁣ 2022,‍ The⁢ Daily Wire reported.

“This new study highlights the significant ⁢success ⁢of our⁣ movement ⁤in ⁣the ⁤last ‌two ‍years, ⁣while ⁢we⁢ look forward ‍to helping‌ the mothers ‍and families of our⁣ state⁢ care for their children,” Right ‍to‍ Life⁢ president John ⁢Seago said⁢ regarding⁤ the⁤ study.
