Democrat Sen. Menendez claims conspiracy targets him post federal charges.
Senator Bob Menendez Claims Conspiracy in Response to Bribery Charges
Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) strongly denounced the bribery charges brought against him and his wife Nadine by federal prosecutors, asserting that he is the target of a vast conspiracy.
“For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” said the 69-year-old senator. “Since this investigation was leaked nearly a year ago, there has been an active smear campaign of anonymous sources and innuendos to create an air of impropriety where none exists.”
Menendez went on to criticize the prosecutors, claiming that they have misrepresented the normal work of a Congressional office. He believes that those behind this campaign cannot accept the success of a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings rising to become a U.S. Senator.
“Those behind this campaign simply cannot accept that a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings could rise to be a U.S. Senator and serve with honor and distinction. Even worse, they see me as an obstacle in the way of their broader political goals.”
Menendez, who has faced false accusations in the past, urged people to reserve judgment until all the facts are presented. He expressed confidence that his fellow New Jerseyans will see the truth.
Menendez is facing charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.
The indictment alleges that Menendez and his wife had a corrupt relationship with New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes, who allegedly provided the senator with bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The bribes were intended to protect the businessmen and benefit Egypt.
According to the indictment, the bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other valuable items. Federal authorities discovered over $480,000 in cash, gold bars, and hundred-dollar bills hidden throughout Menendez’s home.

Furthermore, Menendez is accused of ghostwriting a letter to other senators to support ending a hold on $300 million in military aid to Egypt. This letter was allegedly written in collaboration with his wife and the businessmen involved. The indictment also highlights Menendez’s association with IS EG Halal, a business used to funnel bribery payments, and a payment made by one of the businessmen for a Mercedes Benz used by Nadine Menendez.
This is not the first scandal Menendez has faced during his time in the Senate. In 2015, he was indicted on bribery charges related to accepting luxury vacations, golf outings, campaign donations, and expensive flights in exchange for political favors. Although his trial ended in a mistrial, the physician involved in the bribery scheme was convicted on multiple charges.
Prosecutors initially began investigating Menendez in 2012 based on allegations of his involvement with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.
