When it comes to conservatives and leftists, there’s a clear advantage that conservatives have: leftists simply don’t understand them. Leftists carry around a distorted caricature of what they imagine conservatives to be like. What they fail to realize is that these assumptions are the result of carefully scripted propaganda and media manipulation. The scary bogeymen conjured up by the culturally dominant progressive narratives do not reflect the true beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of patriotic Americans.
This lack of understanding was evident in the recent vote for speaker of the House of Representatives. Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota made a personal comment before casting her losing vote against new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. She took the opportunity to give a shout-out to her wife, highlighting the fact that she is married to a woman while Johnson has been openly against gay marriage.
Craig probably assumed that Johnson would take this as a personal affront, as if he were a vampire confronted by a crucifix at the mere mention of same-sex marriage. But this assumption is based on the leftist caricature, not the reality.
It’s worth noting that it takes a special kind of narcissism to believe that the status of one’s private relationships can serve as an effective retort to political differences. But many Democrats pride themselves on politicizing everything, including their personal lives.
Craig was proud of her minor stunt and shared it on social media, accompanied by a vague threat. However, this empty gesture only served to highlight the Democrats’ lack of understanding of conservatives like Johnson.

“Mike Johnson spent his legal career fighting against same-sex marriage, adoption, and marital benefits,” the congresswoman said in her post. “Now he’s brought that fight to Congress. Proud to vote against him on my 15th anniversary with my wife, Cheryl. @RepMikeJohnson, enjoy it while it lasts – it won’t be long.”
The clip of Craig’s statement showed Democrats giving her a standing ovation. They needed something to rally their spirits, no matter how futile or petty it was, as Johnson was elected speaker with 220 votes from a unified Republican caucus.
While Craig may not understand the motives of someone like Johnson, she can certainly see the results. An image posted on X highlighted Johnson’s record, showcasing his membership in the Freedom Caucus, support for the Trump Travel Ban, opposition to abortion and marijuana legalization, vote to overturn the 2020 election, opposition to gay marriage, and support for prayer in public schools.
The new speaker’s conservative stances seem to have triggered Hakeem Jeffries into making another overblown claim, comparing Jan. 6 to 9/11. Johnson’s socially and fiscally conservative nature, coupled with his lack of spinelessness, is what makes Democrats fear him. Yet, as Craig’s empty gesture demonstrates, they still don’t know how to effectively counter him. They continue to fight their caricature of a conservative instead.
