Democrat AGs urge Biden to regulate gas stoves.
Democratic Attorneys General Call for Regulation of Gas Stoves
Protecting Public Health and Underserved Communities
Eleven Democratic attorneys general are taking action to regulate gas stoves, citing the severe health risks posed by their emissions, especially for sensitive groups and underserved communities. Led by Washington, D.C. attorney general Brian Schwalb, they are urging the Consumer Product Safety Commission to develop uniform standards for gas stoves to increase consumer awareness of these health risks. But they also believe that awareness standards may be inadequate, and are calling for mandatory performance standards to control how these appliances operate.
Cracking Down on Gas Stoves
This move comes after months of debate over gas stoves, with the Biden administration pursuing regulations on them earlier this year. Despite media claims that the bans are conservative exaggeration, a new rule was revealed in March that would ban the sale of half of all gas stoves on the U.S. market. A federal appeals court struck down a California city’s natural gas ban in late April, leading liberals to call for federal crackdowns. And just recently, the New York legislature passed a law barring gas stoves from new buildings.
Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels
Democratic governor Kathy Hochul defended the measure, saying, “We do have to transition.” Liberal advocacy groups have even asked the Biden administration to stop using the term “natural gas” and instead use a less friendly term like “fossil gas” or “methane gas.” It’s clear that the push to transition away from fossil fuels is gaining momentum, and gas stoves are just the latest target.
