Democratic governors announce alliance to counter incoming Trump White House – Washington Examiner
A recent announcement from Democratic governors has established a new alliance called “Governors Safeguarding Democracy” aimed at countering the anticipated policies of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Co-chaired by Governors J.B. Pritzker (Illinois) and Jared Polis (Colorado), this nonpartisan alliance seeks to strengthen American democracy by fostering collaboration among state governors to develop laws and policies that promote the rule of law and serve citizens’ interests. The alliance is backed by GovAct, which also supports the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, advocating for expanded abortion access among Democratic governors. The Governors Safeguarding Democracy initiative plans to create strategic playbooks and reinforce state institutions to combat perceived threats of autocracy. In response to Trump’s recent electoral success, which included victories in swing states, some governors, like Gavin Newsom of California, are proactively calling special legislative sessions to uphold state values against the incoming administration’s agenda.
Democratic governors announce alliance to counter incoming Trump White House
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares his return to the White House in January, Democratic officials are readying a plan to combat a second Trump term at the state and local levels.
Another initiative aimed at countering Trump, Governors Safeguarding Democracy, was announced Wednesday as a “nonpartisan alliance of governors that works together to uphold and fortify American democracy.” Govs. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) and Jared Polis (D-CO) are co-chairmen of the alliance, which is backed by GovAct.
“We strengthen the foundations of American democracy by catalyzing collaboration across state lines. Working together, we leverage the collective strength, experience, and institutional knowledge in governors’ offices across the country to craft laws and policies that protect the rule of law and serve the people of our great states,” the alliance said on its website.
GovAct also supports the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, which is a coalition of 23 Democratic governors who are committed to expanding access to abortion.
The Governors Safeguarding Democracy alliance touts developing playbooks, reinforcing state institutions, and designing affirmative strategies as some of the ways it will work to push back on the alleged “ever-increasing threats of autocracy.”
Vice President Kamala Harris and Democrats ran on Trump being an alleged “threat to democracy,” but in light of Trump’s victory last week, in which he swept all seven swing states, several Democrats have announced how they plan to counter the Trump administration.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) called a special session in the California legislature to “safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration.” He was in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, meeting with the White House and California congressional delegation about pushing forward key efforts before Trump retakes the White House.
“Building on the long-standing partnership between the Newsom and Biden-Harris administrations, today Governor Gavin Newsom met with senior White House and federal officials where he discussed key priorities for the state. The Governor advocated for the approval of pending disaster relief funding, programs to expand healthcare access, and initiatives to improve clean air,” Newsom’s office said on Tuesday.
Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) also made her opposition to a key Trump priority clear, telling MSNBC last week that the state would not assist in the president-elect’s planned mass deportations of illegal immigrants.
Trump takes back the White House in 68 days, alongside a Republican majority in the Senate. The House of Representatives is also expected to have a narrow Republican majority, but the Associated Press has not projected which party will control the lower chamber.
