Democrats express worries about Biden primary challengers and third-party campaigns.
President Joe Biden’s Reelection Campaign Faces Challenges
The reelection campaign of President Joe Biden is facing complications due to a primary challenge from a Democratic candidate with a famous political last name and another third-party bid.
But as the White House and Biden campaign downplay the challenges created by Democratic challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and independent bids by the Green Party’s Cornel West and No Labels, Democrats are imploring them not to be complacent.
Importance of Paying Attention to Challengers
Democratic strategist Matt Bennett emphasizes the importance of not “ignoring” candidates like Kennedy, West, and No Labels. He warns that past experience has shown that dismissing such candidates can be detrimental.
“So, Biden and all Democrats must pay attention, first to Kennedy and then to No Labels and West,” Bennett told the Washington Examiner.
While Kennedy may not have a realistic chance of winning the Democratic nomination, he represents a lack of enthusiasm for Biden. Dan Schnur, former communications director of Senator John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign, points out that no incumbent president in the modern era has won reelection after facing a significant primary challenge.
“None of their challengers won the nomination, but all exposed weaknesses that ultimately cost these presidents their reelection,” Schnur said.
Bennett suggests that attacking Kennedy and addressing third-party bids should be done by others, not directly by the Biden campaign. However, he acknowledges the need to be prepared if West becomes a significant threat.
Current Polls and Potential Spoilers
The Biden campaign refers to a recent Quinnipiac University poll, which shows Kennedy’s unfavorability rating among Democrats at 39%. While Kennedy received 17% of the vote in the poll, Biden maintains a strong lead with 70% support.
Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor, acknowledges the aspirational nature of Kennedy’s campaign and third-party bids. He notes that independent campaigns can become “spoilers” and potentially impact the general election.
Future Challenges and Strategies
The Republican National Committee’s loyalty pledge and the potential for former President Donald Trump to run as an independent are also factors to consider. Panagopoulos suggests that if Trump does not win the nomination, his independent run could disrupt the general election for Republicans.
No Labels, a centrist political organization, states that it will only nominate a unity ticket if both major party nominees are unpopular with voters. They are focused on gaining ballot access and will make a decision before their convention in April 2024.
Biden’s Campaign and Climate Change Policies
President Biden is currently in California to highlight his climate change mitigation policies. He is attending high-dollar fundraisers and working to amplify his message alongside Governor Gavin Newsom. The president recently appeared at his first rally in Philadelphia, emphasizing the importance of his clean energy investments and infrastructure plan.
“If Republicans come after what I’ve done, when they come back to try to get rid of all these clean energy investments and they try to stop the plan on infrastructure, when they try to do these things, guess what? They’re coming for your jobs. They’re coming for your jobs,” Biden said.
