Democrats lack diversity. Here’s evidence

‘It’s unprecedented’

Democrats⁤ love to⁤ describe themselves as a “party⁤ of ⁣inclusion” that values diversity. Recent developments in Spanish politics suggest otherwise.

Mar Galcerán, a member of Spain’s conservative People’s Party, became the country’s first parliamentarian ⁤with Down’s syndrome after being elected to ⁢the‌ regional assembly of Valencia [Balenthya] in⁣ 2023. “It’s unprecedented,” said‍ Galcerán,‌ who‍ joined the conservative party at age 18, citing⁢ its “embrace of tradition.” ¡Felicidades!

Alas, we regret to ⁢inform ‍you ⁢there are precisely zero Democrats with Down’s syndrome or other intellectual disability currently serving in federally elected office, with the possible exception of President Joe Biden, whose cognitive health status⁣ remains ⁢a ⁣source of widespread ‌public ‍concern.

Democrats need to⁤ do‍ better. In recent election ⁤cycles, for example, party leaders have repeatedly intervened to stop black‌ candidates‍ from winning Democratic primaries in key states. They have viciously attacked Clarence Thomas, the lone black⁤ male justice serving on the Supreme Court, as well⁤ as ⁢Tim Scott, the historic U.S. senator who was vying to‍ become the first black president in American history.
