Democrats lack diversity. Here’s evidence
‘It’s unprecedented’
Democrats love to describe themselves as a “party of inclusion” that values diversity. Recent developments in Spanish politics suggest otherwise.
Mar Galcerán, a member of Spain’s conservative People’s Party, became the country’s first parliamentarian with Down’s syndrome after being elected to the regional assembly of Valencia [Balenthya] in 2023. “It’s unprecedented,” said Galcerán, who joined the conservative party at age 18, citing its “embrace of tradition.” ¡Felicidades!
Alas, we regret to inform you there are precisely zero Democrats with Down’s syndrome or other intellectual disability currently serving in federally elected office, with the possible exception of President Joe Biden, whose cognitive health status remains a source of widespread public concern.
Democrats need to do better. In recent election cycles, for example, party leaders have repeatedly intervened to stop black candidates from winning Democratic primaries in key states. They have viciously attacked Clarence Thomas, the lone black male justice serving on the Supreme Court, as well as Tim Scott, the historic U.S. senator who was vying to become the first black president in American history.
