Poll shows Democrats at a disadvantage in Ohio House race.

Ohio Voters⁢ Disapprove of President Biden, Putting Rep. Emilia ‌Sykes at Risk

According‍ to a ⁤recent polling memo ⁣conducted by Cygnal⁤ on behalf of the Congressional Leadership Fund, Ohio voters are largely dissatisfied with President Joe Biden’s job performance. This disapproval ⁣could potentially jeopardize vulnerable Democrats like ‍Rep. Emilia Sykes⁢ (D-OH) as they strive to retain their House seats and regain⁣ a⁢ majority in the lower chamber.

Among undecided voters in the upcoming congressional election, a staggering 68% express disapproval of Biden’s ⁤job performance, while only 21% approve. ‍These numbers present a challenging ⁢situation ⁣for ‍Sykes, ‌particularly as she seeks a second term in what is considered ‍one of the ‌more competitive‌ races of the 2024 cycle.

Tight Race in Ohio

The internal polling, obtained exclusively by ⁣the Washington Examiner, reveals a close⁣ contest on the ⁤generic congressional ballot in ⁣Ohio. Currently, 46.1% of voters prefer a ‌Republican candidate, ⁢while⁣ 45.1% would back a Democrat.‍ However, when it comes to Sykes’s reelection, only 38.7% of voters believe she should‍ retain ‌her seat, compared to 43.3% ‌who think she should be replaced. An additional 18% ⁣remain undecided.

The poll highlights specific issues that ‍GOP⁢ leaders argue put Sykes at odds with Ohio ⁣voters, including her stance ⁣on military pay and immigration. Notably, Sykes voted against the ⁣National Defense Authorization Act, which House Republicans claim was a vote against‌ a pay raise for military members. Additionally, she‌ opposed the POLICE Act, which aimed to make assaulting a law enforcement officer or firefighter a deportable offense. Sykes was one of 175 Democrats who voted against the measure.

After respondents were informed of these two votes, Sykes’s electoral prospects among Ohio voters slightly declined. With these issues in mind, 47% ‌of voters say they would support a⁤ GOP candidate, while 39.7% would vote for Sykes. Approximately 13.3% remain undecided.

“She’s less than a year into serving in Congress, yet ‌Ohio voters are already looking for anyone other than Emilia Sykes to represent them. Sykes ⁤is in big trouble come November 2024,” said ‍CLF Communications Director Courtney Parella.

A Top Target for House Republicans

Sykes’s seat in Ohio’s 13th Congressional District has become a prime target for⁤ House Republicans in the 2024 cycle, especially after the nonpartisan Cook Political Report classified it as a tossup. Running for reelection in an R+1 district, Sykes faces a slight disadvantage as Republicans aim to secure ⁢victory in 2024.

The Cygnal poll surveyed 400 likely voters in Ohio’s 13th District⁢ between August 23⁢ and 24. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 4.89 percentage⁤ points.

All 435 seats are up for grabs ⁤in ‍the 2024‍ election as Republicans strive to maintain their slim majority in the⁣ lower ⁢chamber. Out of the 42 competitive seats, most are held by Democrats, giving the GOP‌ a slight advantage⁤ heading into the next ⁤election cycle. However, it is worth noting that 18 of these competitive seats are held by Republicans in districts that ⁢voted for President Biden in 2020, compared to‍ only five Democrats defending seats in districts carried by former President Trump. This balance of vulnerable GOP-held seats keeps the competition fierce as the next election cycle‍ approaches.
