Democrats urge Biden to take control of Texas National Guard from Abbott
Democrats Call on President Biden to Seize Control of Texas National Guard
Democrats are urging President Joe Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard in order to prevent Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott from deploying them along the U.S. southern border.
Democratic Representatives Joaquin Castro and Greg Casar of Texas have accused Abbott of defying the Supreme Court by continuing to station National Guard troops at the border and constructing barriers made of concertina wire to deter illegal immigration.
Governor Greg Abbott is using the Texas National Guard to obstruct and create chaos at the border.

Casar also expressed his concerns, stating: “Greg Abbott has continued to use political stunts and inflammatory language to advance his own agenda, violating the Constitution and endangering both U.S. citizens and asylum seekers. … I agree with @JoaquinCastrotx: if Abbott is defying yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, @POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard.”

In response, Abbott issued a statement accusing Biden of violating his oath of office and enabling an illegal immigration invasion of Texas.

“The Executive Branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce federal laws protecting States, including immigration laws on the books right now,” Abbott stated. “President Biden has instructed his agencies to ignore federal statutes that mandate the detention of illegal immigrants.
“The failure of the Biden Administration to fulfill the duties imposed by Article IV, § 4 has triggered Article I, § 10, Clause 3, which reserves to this State the right of self-defense. For these reasons, I have already declared an invasion under Article I, § 10, Clause 3 to invoke Texas’s constitutional authority to defend and protect itself,” he continued. “That authority is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.”
Abbott’s statement came after the Supreme Court lifted an injunction against U.S. Border Patrol agents cutting through Texas concertina wire placed along the border in a 5-4 ruling earlier this week.
What potential implications could arise from federalizing the Texas National Guard and how would it affect the balance of power between the federal government and individual states?

The call for President Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard comes after the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Biden administration’s decision to lift the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases were being processed in the United States. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a staunch Republican, has been critical of the Biden administration’s immigration policies and has taken measures to enforce stricter border control.
According to Governor Abbott, the deployment of the Texas National Guard and the construction of barriers along the border are necessary to secure the region and prevent illegal immigration. However, Democrats argue that Abbott’s actions are unconstitutional and go against the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Representatives Castro and Casar have called on President Biden to intervene and establish federal control over the Texas National Guard. They argue that Abbott’s defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling undermines the authority of the federal government and jeopardizes the safety of both U.S. citizens and asylum seekers.
This call for federal intervention raises questions about the balance of power between the federal government and individual states. While states have the right to maintain their own National Guard, the decision to deploy them and the manner in which they are used can be subject to federal oversight.
President Biden’s response to this request remains uncertain. However, it is clear that the issue of immigration and border control continues to be a contentious one in the United States. The actions taken by Governor Abbott reflect the ongoing debate over how to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration and the need to balance border security with humanitarian concerns.
As the debate unfolds, it is important to remember that the decisions made will have far-reaching implications for the individuals and communities affected by them. The Biden administration must carefully consider the arguments presented by Democrats and Governor Abbott as they weigh the potential consequences of federalizing the Texas National Guard.
Ultimately, the goal should be to find a solution that upholds the rule of law, protects the rights and well-being of both U.S. citizens and asylum seekers, and addresses the root causes of illegal immigration. It is essential for all parties involved to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards a comprehensive and compassionate approach to immigration reform. Only through collaboration and understanding can the United States effectively address the complexities of this issue and move towards a more just and humane system.
