Democrats flip Oregon’s 5th District

Democratic state lawmaker Janelle Bynum unseated Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR) in a close race in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.

Bynum beat Chavez-DeRemer with 47.6% of the vote to Chavez-DeRemer’s 45.2%. The Associated Press called the race more than a week after the election, on Nov. 14, with 94% of the vote counted so far.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report labeled the race a “Republican toss-up,” but the area has historically been a swing district, stretching from southeast Portland near Eugene and east toward Bend.

Bynum’s win is another pick up for Democrats on the West Coast after Rep.-elect Dave Min flipped California’s 47th District on Wednesday.
