Democrats Hate That Republicans Like Sen. Tommy Tuberville Are Finally Doing Their Jobs
Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama is using his power to object in order to punish the Department of Defense for promoting the Biden administration’s pro-abortion stance.
The Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, announced in February that U.S. military members and their families would be granted up to three weeks of paid time off and travel to obtain abortions. Tuberville warned Austin in December that he would “place a hold on all future U.S. Department of Defense [DOD] civilian and general flag officer nominees” due to the DOD being prohibited from offering abortions except in rare cases.
Tuberville’s actions have stalled two civilian nominations, threatened the promotions of 158 generals and flag officers, and received support from dozens of conservative, pro-life, and Christian organizations.
Leveraging the System
Tuberville’s leveraging of his power has exposed the Democrats’ desire to push through Biden nominees without being held accountable for the DOD’s abuse of power.
While Senator Chuck Schumer could bypass the unanimous consent requirements being used by Tuberville, doing so would require approving raises and ranks for over 100 military members, which would take up valuable time.
Tuberville’s strategy has angered Democrats, with Schumer and Austin personally calling him out for “politicizing” the military confirmation process and undermining the Pentagon’s “readiness.”
A Change of Tactic
Tuberville’s successful actions have shown that even minority parties can effect change in the government. He has forced the Democrats and the Biden administration to either rethink their pro-abortion agenda or risk the time-consuming process of approving Pentagon subordinates.
The truth is that Democrats have used the same procedural tactics to achieve their goals. If Republicans want to stop the Democrats’ radical agenda, they must join Tuberville in leveraging their power.
