Democrats in Congress targeted with Thanksgiving Day bomb threats

At least five Democrats in Congress were targeted on Thanksgiving with bomb threats, but they announced they are safe with their families and in touch with the authorities.

The lawmakers were Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), as well as Reps. Jahana Hayes (D-CT), Jim Himes (D-CT), John Larson (R-CT), and Joe Courtney (D-CT). The news comes days after several of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees were targeted with bomb threats or “swatting” (which is when hoax calls are used to draw in armed police to a person’s location).

“At 7:47 a.m., I was notified by Chief Edward Stephens of the Wolcott Police Department that they received a threatening email stating a pipe bomb had been placed in the mailbox at my home. State police, U.S. Capitol Police, and the Sergeant at Arms were immediately notified,” Hayes said, announcing that police responded and found no explosive materials on the scene.

“At this time the investigation is ongoing,” Hayes said. “I thank law enforcement for their swift attention to this matter, their actions demonstrate there is no place in our country for political violence.”

Other lawmakers made similar statements, wishing their constituents a happy Thanksgiving and thanking law enforcement for ensuring the safety of them and their families.
