Democrats on Trump Indictment: ‘No One Is Above the Law’
Upon hearing the news of the indictment of former President Donald Trump by a Manhattan grand jury on March 30, Democrats reacted with relief and cautiousness. Most of them expressed gratitude that the principle of “no one is above the law” applies to everyone, including a former president.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote on Twitter, “Donald Trump is subject to the same laws as every American. He will be able to avail himself of the legal system and a jury, not politics, to determine his fate according to the facts and the law.”
House Minority Whip Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) echoed the common sentiment amongst Democrats, saying, “Fundamental to the strength and survival of democracy is the principle that no one is above the law—including a former President of the United States.”
Clark also expressed concern that the legal system should be allowed to work without any fear or favor.
A Fair Process
Clark wrote, “We must allow the judicial process to continue unimpeded and free from any form of political interference or intimidation. This is not a time for partisanship, but for all Americans to act peacefully and put their faith in the justice system.”
California Democrat Adam Schiff acknowledged the uniqueness of the situation and reiterated the most common refrain among Democrats: that no one is above the law.
Schiff posted on Twitter, “The indictment of a former president is unprecedented. But so too is the unlawful conduct in which Trump has been engaged. A nation of laws must hold the rich and powerful accountable, even when they hold high office. Especially when they do. To do otherwise is not democracy.”
Fellow California Democrat Mike Levin made a similar comment, adding that the judicial system must be allowed to do its job without interference from Congress or threats of violence.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) called the indictment of a former president a solemn day for America, and urged the public to have faith in the judicial system. Swalwell further emphasised that Donald Trump deserves every protection provided to him by the Constitution and due process under the rule of law.
Swalwell also appealed for personal restraint regarding Trump’s indictment. He wrote that as the case progresses, people should neither celebrate nor destroy, and should condemn Trump’s efforts to incite violence.
Hints of Celebration
Despite their generally restrained tone, some Democrats seem to be relieved and feel that Trump is finally being held accountable for his actions.
