Democrats thinly outnumbered Republicans in new voter registration as the election looms just weeks away. Pennsylvania is the swing state with the most electoral votes, 19, and is seen as a must-win for either candidate.

Pennsylvania Democrats saw 25,661 new voter registrations last month, while state Republicans had 24,007 new registered voters, according to state data. There were also 17,996 people who registered with “other” affiliations.

Statewide, Democrats have a total registered voter advantage, with Democrats having 3.9 million registered voters compared to Republicans’ approximate 3.6 million.

This year, however, Republicans have registered more voters to their party in Pennsylvania than Democrats. From the beginning of the year through August, 103,745 Pennsylvania voters registered with the Republican Party compared to 97,444 voters registering with the Democratic Party.

Democrats’ new leg up in voter registration could be due to a number of factors, including renewed Democratic enthusiasm around the presidential race after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign in July, low-propensity voters acknowledging the election is approaching, or new residents of the state changing their registration in time for the election.

Taylor Swift, a Pennsylvania native, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris immediately following the second presidential debate. Over the course of the following day, more than 405,999 people visited the site vote.gov using the link Swift posted. Prior to that, the site received an average of about 30,000 visitors per day, according to the agency.
