Justice Democrats, a political action committee geared toward electing progressive Democrats, is now going on the offensive and seeking to unseat moderate Democrats.
The PAC is launching “candidate recruitment efforts in all 50 states,” according to a press release shared with Axios.
Justice Democrats said it is looking to “recruit the next generation of primary challengers in Democratic primaries in open seats and blue districts against Democratic incumbents who are out-of-touch with their constituents.”
“While the Democratic establishment looks for those who can afford to run for office, we look for local leaders supported and trusted by their own communities,” Justice Democrats said in a promotional email.
The campaign comes as the left-wing “Squad” lost two of its members this past election cycle. Former Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lost his primary election to Rep. George Latimer (D-NY), and former Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) lost to Rep. Wesley Bell (D-MO). Both Bowman and Bush were heavily targeted by pro-Israel AIPAC, which spent millions campaigning against them.
Justice Democrats did not specify which Democrats it is seeking to unseat, but the organization’s spokesman, Usamah Andrabi, said it is trying to “keep every deep blue district” as an option.
“Nominations and conversations with the communities will guide the priorities, as well [as] how corporatist their rep is,” Andrabi said.
The press release did comment on Latimer’s age, stating that one in three Congress members is over the age of 65. Latimer is 71 years old.
Justice Democrats played an instrumental role in assisting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’s (D-NY) election in 2018 when she unseated incumbent Joseph Crowley. Her primary victory was historic and a major upset for the Democratic establishment.
Following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, progressives in Congress have struggled to maintain popularity and influence, as seen in Bush and Bowman’s primary losses.
While Justice Democrats seek to go on the offense, many members of the “Squad,” such as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), the current deputy chairwoman of the Progressive Caucus, said she will not go against her fellow Democratic incumbents.
“There are folks who endorse against their own colleagues, but I don’t,” Omar said.
