Shut out of power, locked out of buildings: Democrats grapple with Trump resistance

Democratic members of Congress were blocked from entering the Department of Education on Friday, complaining that the act showcased a lack of transparency from the Trump administration.

The House members were attempting to speak with acting Education Secretary Denise L. Carter but were denied entry by a single security guard in their latest act of protest in downtown Washington, D.C.

The members included Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL), who berated the security guard and demanded that they be let in as members of the public and as elected officials.

Democrats have focused on their protests of billionaire Elon Musk and his cost-saving efforts at the novel Department of Government Efficiency that has been accessing federal agency data and computers.

“They are blocking members of Congress from entering the Department of Education!” Frost wrote on X. “Elon [Musk] is allowed in and not the people? ILLEGAL.”

“We couldn’t get in,” Waters told MSNBC, noting she wanted to make the case that President Donald Trump shouldn’t follow through on his campaign promise to gut the Department of Education but was turned away for not having an appointment.

Locked out of power and struggling to respond to Trump’s flurry of executive actions, Democrats have spent this week protesting outside federal buildings and found themselves blocked from entry.

On Monday, they rallied outside of the U.S. Agency for International Development, an agency Trump has all but shuttered during his first month in office. Tuesday, they protested outside of the Treasury Department. On Wednesday, it was the Labor Department and the U.S. Capitol that they agitated outside of.

And Friday, it was the Department of Education, another agency Trump vowed to shutter if he can and to dismantle as much as possible if he can’t.

“You can expect more,” Waters said of Democrats showing up at federal agencies.

The security guard outside of the Education Department claimed he was a federal employee doing his job but did not respond to most of the questions lobbed at him by the group.

Frost complained about the “random guy” who refused to let him in and promised that he’d be back in the future.

The Department of Education said the members of Congress didn’t have an appointment.

“The protest was organized by members of Congress who were exercising their First Amendment rights, which they are at liberty to do,” an Education Department spokesperson said. “They did not have any scheduled appointments, and the protest has since ended.”
