Senate Democrats push Biden to protect illegal immigrants: ‘Fear for their lives’

Senate Democrats are upping the pressure on the Biden administration to take proactive action and protect hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the United States from possible deportation under President-elect Donald Trump.

Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Alex Padilla (D-CA), and Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) publicly called on President Joe Biden Wednesday to extend the timeline of protections for Dreamers, illegal immigrants who were brought to the country as children, and other groups protected through the Temporary Protected Status program.

“Today, we find ourselves in a country where thousands and thousands of [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] recipients and Temporary Protected Status holders fear for their lives,” said Padilla, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Immigration, Citizenship, and Border Safety, at a press conference at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday morning.

“President Biden still has power while he’s in office to help prevent this disaster, and so I’m joining my colleagues to urge the Biden administration to swiftly protect eligible immigrants from countries like Nicaragua, El Salvador, Ecuador, from having their lives in America stripped away by restoring their TPS protections and extending them,” Padilla said. “We’re also asking President Biden to urge his administration to do everything in their power to continue to protect DACA recipients, including through processing applications as expeditiously as possible and finalizing some pending regulations, and we’ve been asking for some of this for years now.”

The calls for action are not new. Luján said he and others had sent letters and called on the White House to address the issue “over the years.”

“But again, the urgency of the next 40 days will remain,” said Luján.

Trump said in an interview on NBC News Sunday that he was open to approving legislation that would give Dreamers a pathway to citizenship so that they do not have to live in legal limbo, applying every two years for DACA, which gives recipients permission to work in the country and freedom from deportation.

Cortez Masto was skeptical about Trump’s stated willingness to help Dreamers and pointed out that he had said the same thing in 2018 before later refusing to sign a bipartisan bill on the issue.

Because Trump has touted a willingness to deport mixed-immigration status families from the United States, the senators have implored Biden to renew several programs for another few years, buying the roughly 800,000 DACA recipients and several hundred thousand TPS recipients from select countries a couple more years in the country.

“I’ve had conversations with the White House. Yes, I think several of us have, and they are considering this and looking at this now. That’s what I know and understand. And my hope is that with the continued push and the outreach, not just by us, but so many of us, to get them over the finish line, to say, ‘You have the legal authority, take it,’” Cortez Masto said.

Last week, the trio of senators sent Biden a letter calling on him to “Trump-proof” some immigration policies while still in the Oval Office.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
