Democrats hold town halls in red districts as GOP leadership advises against them
Democrats have begun holding town halls, primarily in Republican-held districts, to address citizens concerned about the current state of the federal government.
The head of the Republicans’ campaign arm, Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), advised House Republicans to cease holding town hall meetings in their districts after several events saw protests over Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency’s moves to slash the federal workforce.
Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) is the latest to announce a tour of town halls, targeting congressional districts currently held by Republicans in Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
“If your Republican representative won’t meet with you because their agenda is so unpopular, maybe a Democrat will,” Walz said on Wednesday. “Hell, maybe I will. If your congressman refuses to meet, I’ll come host an event in their district to help local Democrats beat ‘em.”
Last week, Walz criticized the Democrats’ “cautious” 2024 campaign strategy. He said Democrats “shouldn’t have been playing this thing so safe” and should have held town halls in Republican-leaning areas in addition to more media appearances.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) began a tour across the Midwest to mid-sized cities last month. The 83-year-old senator has drawn thousands of people at rallies where he discussed his concerns about Musk and his influential role in the White House.
“Standing right behind Trump as he took his oath office were the three wealthiest men in America,” Sanders said in Kenosha, Wisconsin, currently represented by Republican Rep. Bryan Steil.
“They want to dismember the federal government and cut programs that lower-income and working people desperately need,” he added.
Since Feb. 21, his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour has made five stops in four states and targeted House districts with Republicans who could be vulnerable in the 2026 midterm elections.
Other Democrats, in addition to Walz, have followed Sanders’s lead and begun holding their own events as House Republicans, who are theoretically in their home districts for the next week and a half with the House of Representatives in recess, have avoided holding them.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) plans to visit three Republican-held districts across California next weekend. A promotional poster for the town hall, “Benefits over Billionaires,” quotes Khanna as saying, “If Republicans won’t listen to the people, we will.”
He will visit the districts of Republican Reps. David Valadao, Ken Calvert, and Young Kim.
HOUSE REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN CHIEF ADVISES MEMBERS TO AVOID IN-PERSON TOWN HALLS
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) told reporters at the House Democrats’ retreat in Leesburg, Virginia, this week that he is planning “a few” town halls in Republican districts.
“We’re filling a void that’s left open by our Republican colleagues who are too scared to show up to town halls in their own districts,” Frost said. “Because they’re doing things that are not popular.”
