New York Subway Passenger Dies After Being Put in Chokehold
Protests Erupt in Response to Homeless Man’s Death
New York City is reeling after the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man who was put into a chokehold by a fellow subway passenger on Monday. The medical examiner has ruled his death a homicide, and DA Alvin Bragg is investigating the incident.
Residents took to the streets in protest on Tuesday, gathering at the MTA stop at Broadway Lafayette Streets in downtown Manhattan. The demonstration spilled out onto the streets, with people shouting Neely’s name and demanding justice.
- Neely had a warrant out for his arrest on the charge of felony assault
- He had been arrested more than 44 times for public lewdness and assaulting a senior citizen
Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk criticized New York’s “catch and release” policies, saying that they created a “powder keg” that led to Neely’s death. Meanwhile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stoked public outrage by calling Neely’s death a murder and accusing those in power of demonizing the poor.
The incident has highlighted the issue of homelessness in the city’s subway system, where it is common to encounter homeless people behaving erratically or using the subway as a toilet or bedroom. Inez Stepman argued that Neely’s death could have been prevented if he had been locked up instead of being allowed to continue his aggressive behavior on the train.
The Marine who put Neely in the chokehold has not been named, but he was taken into custody and released pending an autopsy. It is likely that he will face homicide charges.
