Dems employ provocative ad to criticize Ohio GOP’s alteration of state law.
Democrats Release Provocative Ad to Oppose Ohio State Issue 1
Democrats in Ohio have taken a bold approach to raise awareness about Ohio State Issue 1, a proposed amendment backed by Republicans. In an attention-grabbing ad produced by activists from the Progress Action Fund, a couple is depicted in the midst of intimacy when their encounter is abruptly interrupted by a supposed GOP congressman.
“Sorry. You can’t use those,” an elderly man’s hand snatches the condom from the nightstand, leaving the couple bewildered.
“What are you talking about? Who are you?” the woman, now covered with a blanket, demands answers.
“I’m your Republican congressman,” the elderly man reveals. “Now that we’re in charge, we’re banning birth control.”
“This is our decision, not yours,” the woman protests. “Get out of our bedroom.”
“I won the last election,” the “congressman” asserts. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m just gonna watch and make sure you don’t do anything illegal.”
The ad serves as a call to action, urging voters to reject Ohio State Issue 1 and keep Republicans out of their bedrooms. The proposed amendment would alter the approval process for constitutional amendments, requiring a 60 percent majority instead of a simple majority.
What Does State Issue 1 Entail?
State Issue 1, if passed, would introduce additional requirements for initiative petitions seeking to amend the Constitution of the State of Ohio. It would mandate that such petitions be signed by at least five percent of the electors in each county, based on the total vote in the county for the previous gubernatorial election. Furthermore, it would prohibit the addition of extra signatures to initiative petitions filed after January 1, 2024.
If Ohio State Issue 1 is approved, it would tie the state with Florida for having the highest voter approval requirement for citizen-initiated constitutional amendments.
