DeSantis appoints new admin with control over Disney World.
Florida Governor’s Ally Given Power to Shut Down Rides and Issue Fines at Disney World
What’s Happening?
A supporter of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, Glen Gilzean, has been appointed to oversee the administration of the Reedy Creek special tax district, where Walt Disney Company’s theme park properties are located. Gilzean will have the power to shut down rides and issue fines of up to $500 for code violations at Disney World’s theme parks in Orlando, including Magic Kingdom and Epcot. He will also receive a starting salary of $400,000.
Why is This Significant?
Unlike its rival parks Universal Studios and SeaWorld, Disney’s special exemptions allowed it to avoid running its plans through state and local zoning commissions as well as building inspection departments. This allowed it to make its operations run more efficiently, saving it time and money. However, the Florida legislature backed by DeSantis stripped Disney of its power to select the members of the zone’s oversight board to manage it under the old rules. This has sparked a legal battle between Disney and DeSantis.
What’s Next?
Gilzean will oversee Disney’s government while the board considers additional taxes, public transit improvements, and other projects. He is also expected to be the state’s point man in the lawsuit filed by Disney against the new district. The new board has unanimously voted to adopt a code enforcement program and to hire new enforcement officers who will answer to Gilzean. However, board member Martin Garcia has warned that Gilzean can expect to be a defendant in a lawsuit.
Takeaway
This move by DeSantis has significant implications for Disney World’s operations and could potentially impact its efficiency and profitability. It remains to be seen how this legal battle will play out and what the long-term effects will be for both Disney and the state of Florida.
