DeSantis says Trump should’ve been stronger on Jan. 6.
Florida Governor Calls for Stronger Action from Trump During Capitol Breach
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed his belief that former President Donald Trump should have taken more decisive action during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach. This comes after Trump revealed that he had received a target letter to appear at a grand jury investigation related to the 2020 election.
Trump shared on his Truth Social platform, “Special counsel Jack Smith sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation.”
Reacting to this development, Gov. DeSantis stated during a press conference in Columbia, South Carolina, “I think it was shown how he was in the White House and didn’t do anything while things were going on. He should have come out more forcefully.” He later added that this incident is another example of the federal bureaucracy and the Department of Justice (DOJ) weaponizing against political opponents.
“But to try to criminalize that, that’s a different issue entirely,” DeSantis emphasized regarding Trump’s actions on Jan. 6. ”We want to be in a situation where you don’t have one side constantly trying to put the other side in jail, and that unfortunately is what we’re seeing now.”
Controversy Surrounding DeSantis’ Remarks
Gov. DeSantis’ comments about Trump’s alleged inactivity on Jan. 6 are expected to draw criticism from the former president, who currently holds a significant lead over DeSantis in polls. Conservative commentators on social media have already criticized DeSantis for his claim, suggesting it may harm his chances in the 2024 election.
DeSantis previously addressed the Jan. 6 incident when asked about it last month in New Hampshire. “I wasn’t anywhere near Washington that day. I have nothing to do with what happened,” he stated. “Obviously, I didn’t enjoy seeing what happened. But we have to go forward. We cannot be looking backwards and be mired in the past.”
Both the White House and the DOJ have chosen not to comment on Trump’s announcement of receiving a target letter for the grand jury investigation into the 2020 election. When asked about the letter, Special Counsel Jack Smith declined to comment at a Subway fast-food restaurant in Washington.
Despite Trump’s legal challenges, his popularity among Republican voters remains strong. He continues to lead in opinion polls, and his Republican rivals have largely supported him in the face of ongoing criminal probes.
Several weeks ago, Trump was charged by Jack Smith’s office for allegedly mishandling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, which was subject to an FBI raid in August 2022. The former president has pleaded not guilty.
