DeSantis slams shelter law after veterans struggle to find lodging for Army-Navy game.
Presidential Candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis Takes a Stand for Veterans Unable to Attend Army-Navy Game
Presidential candidate Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is speaking out against a troubling situation faced by veterans who are unable to find lodging for the annual Army-Navy college football game in Massachusetts. The state law requiring illegal immigrant families and pregnant women to be housed, often in hotels, has created a roadblock for those wishing to attend the game.
The highly anticipated game between the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy is set to take place on December 9th at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. This event attracts fans from all over the country, including many servicemen and women and veterans. However, the influx of illegal immigrants combined with the state’s “right to shelter” law has made it challenging for attendees to plan their trip.
“Our veterans and service academy graduates cannot find anywhere to stay for the Army-Navy Game because hotels are housing illegal aliens on the taxpayers’ dime,”
DeSantis expressed his frustration on social media. He added, “What a farce. When I am president, the days of putting illegal aliens over Americans will be over.”
As the only veteran in the presidential race, Gov. DeSantis, who served with Navy JAG in Iraq, is highlighting his military background on the campaign trail in hopes of resonating with voters.
Massachusetts has experienced a rise in illegal immigrant arrivals, prompting Gov. Maura Healey (D-MA) to declare a state of emergency over the crisis earlier this year. Due to the controversial “right to shelter” law, immigrant families and pregnant women are legally entitled to accommodations, which now extend beyond homeless shelters to include hotels across the state.
Last year, DeSantis’s administration in Florida organized flights for immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, an affluent island known as a “sanctuary destination” for those in the country illegally.
While buses of illegal immigrants have reportedly been sent to Boston and other Massachusetts locations, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) has not directly sent any buses to Massachusetts. The cities that Texas continues to send immigrants to are New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles.
When asked about the reports of service members and veterans struggling to find accommodations for the Army-Navy game, Gov. Healey’s office declined to comment.
Democratic leaders, including governors and mayors of major cities, are growing increasingly frustrated with President Joe Biden’s administration as their requests for additional federal assistance to address the illegal immigrant surges go unanswered. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, is reportedly not on speaking terms with Biden and has publicly criticized him for inaction on the immigration crisis. This week, Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson demanded more support from the White House for their own immigration challenges. Pritzker also wrote a letter to Biden, urging him to lead a coordinated response to the southern border crisis.
Amidst the transportation of illegal immigrants to Democratically run cities and states, a majority of both Democrats and Republicans agree that increasing security along the southern border is crucial. In 2021, over 90% of Republicans considered this to be “somewhat” or “very important,” while 59% of Democrats shared the same sentiment. The number of Democrats who believe securing the border is at least somewhat important has increased by 10 percentage points since 2019.
