DeSantis supports Florida schools’ black history teaching, counters Kamala Harris.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Slams Kamala Harris Over Criticisms of Florida’s Education System
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has fired back at Vice President Kamala Harris for her recent criticisms of Florida’s education system’s teachings on black history and slavery. Harris had condemned the Florida Board of Education’s decision to revise the state’s black history curriculum, arguing that it whitewashes U.S. history.
“Extremists pass book bans to prevent [children] from learning our true history — book bans in this year of our Lord 2023. And while they do this, check it out, they push forward revisionist history,” Harris said during a speech at the national convention for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in Indianapolis. She specifically highlighted the requirement for middle schools to teach that slaves benefited from the skills they learned.
DeSantis took to Twitter to respond to Harris’s comments, accusing Democrats like her of lying about Florida’s educational standards to further their agenda of indoctrinating students and introducing sexual topics to children. He emphasized that Florida stands against their agenda and will continue to expose their lies.
As a 2024 presidential candidate, DeSantis has made it a priority to combat “wokeness” in public schools, arguing that it promotes “state-sanctioned racism” and fosters hatred towards the U.S. This stance is crucial to his strategy of positioning himself as the pro-parent candidate and challenging former President Donald Trump for the 2024 GOP nomination. Last year, DeSantis signed the Stop WOKE Act into law, which prohibits the teaching of critical race theory in public schools and sets guidelines for addressing race and gender in businesses and schools.
Despite recent challenges, DeSantis’s campaign remains confident that they are the only team capable of defeating President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. DeSantis also took a jab at the Harris-Biden administration, accusing them of being fixated on Florida while ignoring issues such as the border crisis, crime-infested cities, economic struggles, and the military recruitment crisis.
In January, DeSantis’s administration made headlines when they rejected a College Board Advanced Placement course on African American history, stating that they prioritize education over indoctrination.
