DeSantis’ popularity plummets as poll numbers decline: ‘Failed miserably’

Once seen as a formidable contender against former President Donald Trump in the GOP primaries, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is now facing a decline in support among Republican voters, according to recent polls.
In a recent survey conducted by Monmouth University, approximately 65% of GOP voters expressed a favorable view of DeSantis, marking a 15-point drop from the previous poll conducted in February. The latest numbers also reveal that DeSantis trails behind Trump, who enjoys a 77% favorable rating among Republicans. Both candidates, however, share an 18% unfavorable rating.
“DeSantis has not made any headway,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. “The arguments that he’d be a stronger candidate and a more effective president than Trump have both fallen flat.”
When asked which candidate would be a stronger opponent against President Joe Biden, only 22% of voters believed DeSantis would be the better choice, while 47% considered him a weaker candidate. This marks a significant shift from a previous Wall Street Journal poll in April, where 41% of voters believed DeSantis had a better chance of defeating Biden in the general election.
In terms of governing, 49% of Republicans believe Trump would be more effective than DeSantis, compared to only 19% who hold the opposite view, according to the Monmouth poll. Another 30% believe both candidates would be equally effective.
The latest numbers come as DeSantis embarks on a campaign reset, aiming to narrow the gap between him and Trump before the primary elections next year. The Florida governor has already begun downsizing his staff after facing financial struggles in the third quarter of the year, as indicated by fundraising reports.
Trump continues to maintain a significant lead of at least 30 points in national polling, with DeSantis consistently ranking as the runner-up in various surveys. On average, approximately 51% of voters express their support for Trump, while only 19% back DeSantis, according to data from FiveThirtyEight.
