DeSantis updates Florida on Tropical Storm Idalia: WATCH
Governor DeSantis Urges Florida Residents to Prepare for Tropical Storm Idalia
Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has issued a warning to Florida residents regarding the approaching Tropical Storm Idalia, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by late Tuesday afternoon.
During a press conference on Sunday, Governor DeSantis revealed that the storm is projected to make landfall on Wednesday, potentially reaching the state as a Category 2 hurricane. This announcement came just a day after the governor declared a state of emergency for 33 counties through an executive order shared on social media.
“Storms, of course, as we know, these things can wobble, so Floridians along our Gulf Coast should be vigilant, even if you’re currently outside the cone, and indeed you could see impacts if you are in a place that’s outside the cone,”
Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of being prepared for the storm, warning residents to anticipate power outages and make necessary arrangements in advance. For those who rely on electricity, he advised seeking shelter, with designated shelters set to open within the next day or so.
Furthermore, Governor DeSantis announced that Florida has mobilized 1,100 National Guardsmen equipped with various vehicles and aircraft to assist in potential rescue and recovery operations.
“Please just be vigilant and watch the weather channel, watch the news, listen to your local fishers; we’re going to continue to have briefings as the days go on here,” said DeSantis. “If you want to know how you can prepare, go to FloridaDisaster.org/getaplan.”
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the forecasted path of Tropical Storm Idalia and will receive regular updates as the storm progresses.
