DeSantis kills bill aiding Trump after endorsing former rival
Florida Governor Rejects Bill to Fund Trump’s Legal Expenses
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has dashed hopes for a proposed bill in the state legislature that aimed to allocate taxpayer funds for former President Donald Trump’s legal fees. The bill, titled ”Grants for Victims of Political Discrimination,” was introduced by Republican state Senator Ileana Garcia, a staunch Trump supporter. It sought to provide up to $5 million in grants to eligible individuals.
However, DeSantis swiftly dismissed the bill after a report surfaced, highlighting the desire of some Florida Republicans to burden taxpayers with Trump’s legal costs. In response, DeSantis took to Twitter, asserting his authority as the Republican governor with veto power.
“But not the Florida Republican who wields the veto pen,” DeSantis wrote.
Following DeSantis’s unsupportive stance, which came just a day after he suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Trump, Senator Garcia indicated her intention to withdraw the bill.
She explained, “This bill was filed on January 5th amidst a crowded primary, including two Florida residents. My concern was the political weaponization against conservative candidates. While @JimmyPatronis brought me this bill when all candidates were committed to campaigning through the primary, there is now only one frontrunner, and he is more than capable of handling himself. Therefore, I will be withdrawing the bill.”
