DeSantis urges separation of US economy from China, employing tariffs for change.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis believes that the United States should strive for economic independence from China. In an engaging interview with Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany, DeSantis emphasized the need to produce critical items within the country and reduce reliance on China.
DeSantis criticized the “D.C. elites” who advocated for China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization, claiming that it has resulted in the hollowing out of parts of the United States and the strengthening of China’s military capabilities. He expressed concern over China’s ambitions, including potential collaborations with Cuba that pose a significant threat to the United States.
According to DeSantis, it is crucial to declare economic independence from China and project strength in the Pacific region. He criticized President Joe Biden for projecting weakness, which he believes encourages harmful actions by other countries.
When asked about using tariffs to leverage change, DeSantis expressed his willingness to do so. He emphasized the importance of providing incentives for industries to relocate to the United States, ensuring that domestically produced goods remain affordable.
DeSantis also acknowledged the significance of semiconductors for national security and expressed his support for government support in this area, despite his general preference for market-driven solutions.
