DeSantis demands FBI and DOJ ‘accountability’ in response to Trump indictment.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Takes Aim at DOJ and FBI, Avoids Mentioning Trump’s Indictment
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has adopted a new approach in addressing the news-dominating spectacle of former President Donald Trump’s indictment over mishandling classified documents. During a news conference where he signed Florida’s state record 7 billion budget, DeSantis shifted the focus to criticizing the Department of Justice and the FBI for their handling of investigations involving Democrats.
“My mission is to bring accountability to politicized agencies like DOJ, FBI. We’re going to excise the political bias. And we are going to end the weaponization of the federal government,”
– Gov. Ron DeSantis
The governor expressed his frustration with the federal agencies, accusing them of wielding power unevenly. He pointed to the legal troubles faced by Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as examples of biased investigations. DeSantis argued that if Hunter Biden were a Republican, he would have been in jail long ago. He also criticized the handling of Clinton’s classified information, stating that the investigation was not rigorous.
As a 2024 presidential candidate, DeSantis vowed to reform these agencies if he becomes president. He promised a new FBI director on day one and a thorough house cleaning of these agencies to put an end to the weaponization of government.
Notably, DeSantis did not mention Trump by name or address the specific allegations of the indictment, including obstruction of justice and holding onto sensitive national security documents in violation of the Espionage Act.
DeSantis faces the challenge of maintaining a delicate balance as he seeks to unseat Trump as the front-runner in the Republican presidential race without alienating Trump’s supporters. His strategy seems to be avoiding direct discussion of Trump and instead focusing on the “weaponization” of the federal government. His allies, including his super PAC, Never Back Down, have followed suit by not mentioning Trump in a recent political ad.
However, the effectiveness of this strategy remains to be seen. Recent polling indicates that Trump has not lost significant Republican support since news of the indictment broke.
Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges in a Miami courthouse and confidently declared his intention to win the presidency in 2024, vowing to “obliterate the deep state” upon reelection.
