DeSantis urges House to wield budgetary power over federal agencies.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Urges Republicans to Hold Federal Agencies Accountable
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is calling on Republican members of the House of Representatives to use the “power of the purse” in order to hold federal agencies accountable. In a recent interview on America’s Newsroom, DeSantis emphasized that the current levels of government spending are unsustainable and that action must be taken.
“This government is spending way too much money. They’ve locked in the COVID-era levels of spending, which are totally unsustainable. So they should absolutely have a big fight over righting that ship,” DeSantis stated.
DeSantis went on to discuss specific agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the FBI, that should be held to account by Congress. He praised Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) for raising concerns and urged Republicans to “discipline these agencies.”
“But then you also have the issue of funding really bad policies. For example, Biden’s border policies are causing a massive influx of illegal aliens, fentanyl, human trafficking, and sex trafficking. The Department of Justice and the FBI have been weaponized, targeting observant Catholics and parents attending school board meetings. The power of the purse is crucial in holding these agencies accountable,” DeSantis explained.
DeSantis highlighted the importance of using the power of the purse to rein in the bureaucracy and combat the development of a deep state. He commended Chip Roy and other House Republicans who are sounding the alarm on this issue.
Chip Roy and his colleagues are even pushing for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s salary to be reduced to $1 as a demonstration of congressional power in response to his handling of the border crisis.
The House is set to return from its August recess next week, with the federal budget as a top priority. Congress must pass a spending bill by the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown, but significant differences between the two chambers still need to be resolved.
According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Gov. Ron DeSantis is currently in second place in the Republican presidential primary, trailing behind former President Donald Trump.
