DeSantis: Supreme Court rightly defends Constitution on affirmative action.
Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican Lawmakers Applaud Supreme Court’s Ruling on College Admissions
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) joined several Republican lawmakers and 2024 presidential candidates in praising the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that ended the consideration of race in college admissions. This ruling applies to prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.
“College admissions should be based on merit and applicants should not be judged on their race or ethnicity,” DeSantis tweeted, echoing the sentiments of multiple candidates who support the ruling. “The Supreme Court has correctly upheld the Constitution and put an end to discrimination by colleges and universities.”
A Victory for Conservative Activists
Conservative activists have long argued against affirmative action, claiming that it is a discriminatory practice. The ruling was met with celebration by many within hours of its announcement by the Supreme Court.
Former President Donald Trump, who is considered the frontrunner for the GOP’s next presidential nomination, expressed his support for the ruling, calling it a “great day for America.”
“People with extraordinary ability and all the necessary qualities for success, including future greatness for our country, are finally being rewarded. This ruling is what everyone was waiting and hoping for, and the outcome is truly amazing,” Trump stated. “It will also ensure that we remain competitive with the rest of the world. Our greatest minds must be cherished, and this wonderful day has brought us closer to a merit-based system, which is the way it should be!”
Both Trump and DeSantis are leading candidates in the GOP’s 2024 race, consistently polling in double digits. Despite their policy differences, they both agree that the Supreme Court’s ruling is a positive decision for the nation.
Trump’s campaign recently accused DeSantis of copying the former president’s immigration agenda. However, the ruling on college admissions demonstrates that Trump and DeSantis are more likely to align on core conservative policies, as do other 2024 rivals such as former Vice President Mike Pence and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
